Boat Detailing in Las Vegas: Keeping Your Watercraft Show-Ready in the Desert

Las Vegas sits at roughly 2,000 feet elevation with over 300 sunny days a year. That’s great for days on Lake Mead or Lake Las Vegas — but it’s brutal on your watercraft. UV radiation at this altitude degrades gel coat and fiberglass faster than coastal climates. Combine that with the highly mineralized water leaving white calcium deposits all over the hull, and most boats in the Las Vegas area look years older than they actually are.

Kevin, Founder of AOA Detailing, and his team service boats throughout the Las Vegas metro. “We see gel coat oxidation in boats that are only two or three seasons old,” Kevin says. “The desert sun is relentless. A proper detail schedule is the difference between a boat that holds its value and one that fades to chalk.”

AOA Detailing provides mobile boat detailing — we come to your marina slip, storage facility, or home — serving within 25 miles of Las Vegas.

What Happens to Boats in Desert Climates

Gel Coat Oxidation — Fiberglass hulls have a protective gel coat that gradually breaks down under intense UV exposure. You’ll notice the surface becoming dull, chalky, or rough to the touch. Oxidation isn’t just cosmetic — it allows moisture and contaminants to penetrate deeper into the fiberglass.

Hard Water Mineral Deposits — Lake Mead and surrounding bodies of water have elevated calcium and magnesium levels. Every splash leaves behind white or grayish mineral spots on the hull, gunwale, and deck fittings. These are harder to remove than typical water spots and require acid-based cleaners if left too long.

Vinyl and Upholstery Cracking — Boat seats and cushions exposed to Las Vegas sun fade and crack within a season or two without proper UV protectant. The dashboard and helm area are equally vulnerable.

Algae and Waterline Staining — Even in desert lakes, algae accumulates at the waterline. If your boat sits in the water rather than dry-storing, the waterline can develop a green or brown stain ring that standard washing won’t remove.

Metal Oxidation — Stainless steel rails, cleats, and hardware dull and develop surface rust streaks without regular polishing.

AOA Detailing’s Boat Detailing Process

Hull Wash and Decontamination

We start with a thorough wash using marine-specific cleaners that cut through mineral deposits, algae, and road grime (if the boat was trailered). We use a pH-neutral soap for painted surfaces and a mild acid-based cleaner for mineral deposits at the waterline. Every inch of the hull gets scrubbed by hand — no pressure washers that can damage gel coat or drive water into fittings.

Gel Coat Compounding and Polishing

Oxidized gel coat requires machine compounding to remove the dead surface layer and restore gloss. We use a dual-action polisher with compound pads, working section by section across the entire hull. After compounding, we refine with a finishing polish to remove swirl marks and bring the gel coat to a deep, wet-look shine.

For severely oxidized boats, this step can take several hours — but the transformation is dramatic. A boat that looked milky and faded comes out looking new.

Wax or Sealant Protection

After polishing, we apply a marine-grade wax or sealant to protect the gel coat from UV rays and make future cleaning easier. We can also apply a ceramic coating to the hull for longer-lasting protection — typically 2–3 years versus the 6–12 months you get from conventional wax.

Interior Cleaning

The cockpit, helm area, storage compartments, and any cabin space get a full detail:

  • Vinyl seats and cushions: cleaned with marine vinyl cleaner, conditioned with UV protectant
  • Carpet and flooring: vacuumed, spot-treated, and shampooed if needed
  • Helm and dashboard: wiped down, plastic surfaces protected
  • Cupholders, storage pockets, and rod holders: cleaned and deodorized

Metal and Hardware Polishing

Stainless steel rails, cleats, hinges, and trim get polished to remove oxidation and surface rust streaks. We apply a protective coat to slow future oxidation.

Window and Windshield Cleaning

Marine glass and plastic windshields get cleaned streak-free with products that won’t leave residue or hazing. We treat plastic windshields carefully — the wrong product can cause micro-scratching.

How Often Should You Detail Your Boat in Las Vegas?

The frequency depends on how often you use it and how you store it:

Use Level Storage Recommended Frequency
Heavy (20+ days/year) In the water Full detail 2x per season + wax every 3 months
Moderate (10-20 days/year) Dry storage or trailer Full detail 1x per season
Light (<10 days/year) Covered storage Full detail every 1-2 seasons

Dry storage significantly extends the time between details because UV exposure is reduced. Even so, we recommend a detail before the first outing of the season.

Ceramic Coating for Boats: Is It Worth It?

Short answer: yes, especially in Las Vegas.

A ceramic coating applied to your boat’s gel coat forms a hard, hydrophobic layer that:

  • Blocks UV rays from breaking down the gel coat
  • Makes water, mineral deposits, and algae slide off rather than bond
  • Dramatically reduces how often you need to wax or polish
  • Keeps the hull cleaner between outings

For serious boaters who get on the water regularly, ceramic coating pays for itself within a season or two in reduced detailing costs and time.

Pre-Storage Boat Detailing

If your boat goes into storage for an extended period, a full detail before storage is one of the best investments you can make:

  1. Remove all mineral deposits and biological growth before they etch into gel coat
  2. Apply a fresh coat of wax or sealant to protect the hull during storage
  3. Clean and condition all vinyl to prevent cracking in dry desert air
  4. Wipe down all metal hardware and apply protectant to prevent oxidation
  5. Remove any organic material from the interior to prevent odors

Our RV and specialty detail team handles pre-storage details regularly. Call us at (775) 244-5315 or visit our RV detailing page for more on specialty vehicle services.
