Spring Car Detailing Checklist: Las Vegas Edition

Why Spring Is the Most Important Time to Detail Your Car in Las Vegas

Most people think of spring cleaning as something you do inside your house. But here in Las Vegas, spring is arguably the single most important time to give your car a thorough detail. Why? Because the mild winter months are about to give way to the brutal desert summer, and the condition your car enters that season in determines how well it survives.

I’m Kevin from AOA Detailing, and every spring our team sees the same pattern: cars that were neglected over winter come in with embedded hard water spots, accumulated road film, dried mineral deposits, and clear coats crying for help. The owners who get ahead of it with a proper spring detail save themselves a much bigger (and more expensive) correction job come fall.

This checklist covers everything you need — or everything we’ll do for you — to get your vehicle summer-ready. Whether you’re in Summerlin, Henderson, or anywhere across the valley, these steps apply.

Step 1: The Foundation — A Proper Decontamination Wash

A spring detail starts with a wash, but not just any rinse-and-go. After months of winter driving — even mild Las Vegas winters — your car has accumulated layers of road grime, brake dust, mineral deposits from sprinklers, and fine desert sand that’s embedded deeper than you’d think.

The right approach:

  • Pre-rinse thoroughly to remove loose sand and grit before touching the paint with anything
  • Two-bucket wash method — one bucket with pH-neutral car soap, one with clean rinse water, and a grit guard in each
  • Iron fallout remover — spray the entire vehicle and watch the purple bleeding as it dissolves embedded brake dust and metallic particles
  • Wheel wells and undercarriage — don’t skip these. Winter may be mild here, but the road dust and debris that accumulates underneath is significant

This step alone makes a dramatic difference. If you’ve never used an iron remover on your car, prepare to be surprised at how much contamination comes off — even if the car looks “clean.”

Step 2: Clay Bar Treatment for Embedded Contaminants

After the decontamination wash, run your hand across a painted panel. If it feels rough or gritty rather than glass-smooth, there are bonded contaminants that need to come off before you can apply any protection.

A clay bar gently pulls these particles out of the clear coat without damaging the paint. In Las Vegas, where hard water, industrial fallout from the Strip area, and construction dust are constant, clay barring is not optional — it’s essential.

Pro tip: Focus extra attention on horizontal surfaces (hood, roof, trunk lid) since these collect the most airborne fallout. Cars parked near construction zones along the 215 Beltway or near Downtown experience significantly heavier contamination.

Step 3: Assess and Address Paint Damage

Now that the surface is clean and decontaminated, it’s time to assess. This is the step most DIY detailers skip, and it’s where professional results diverge from amateur ones.

Under good lighting, examine the paint for:

  • Swirl marks — circular micro-scratches from improper washing (extremely common)
  • Water spot etching — raised rings from mineral deposits that have bonded into the clear coat
  • Oxidation — a hazy, dull appearance, especially on horizontal surfaces with maximum sun exposure
  • Clear coat failure — peeling or flaking clear coat (requires professional intervention)

If swirl marks, light water spot etching, or mild oxidation are present, a single-stage paint correction can restore the surface to like-new condition. This is the step that makes the biggest visual difference — it’s the difference between a car that looks “clean” and a car that looks absolutely stunning.

For cars that have been well-maintained, a light polish may be all that’s needed. For vehicles that have endured a couple of Las Vegas summers without proper protection, a more aggressive correction may be necessary.

Had AOA do a full spring detail on my Tahoe and it looks incredible. The ceramic coating they applied last year is still beading water perfectly. Kevin really knows his stuff.

Step 4: Apply or Renew Your Paint Protection

With a corrected, perfectly smooth surface, it’s time to apply protection — your shield against the coming summer heat and UV onslaught.

Your options, ranked by durability:

Protection Level Durability Best For Approximate Cost
Spray sealant 1-3 months Quick maintenance boost $
Paint sealant 4-6 months Moderate protection on a budget $$
Ceramic coating 2-5+ years Maximum long-term protection $$$$

In my honest opinion, if you live in Las Vegas and your car sits in the sun for any significant amount of time, a professional ceramic coating is the smart move. The one-time cost pays for itself compared to reapplying sealant every few months, and the UV protection is in a completely different league. We’ve had clients in Centennial Hills and Spring Valley whose coated vehicles still bead water perfectly after two full desert summers.

If you already have a ceramic coating, spring is the ideal time to assess its condition and apply a ceramic booster spray to refresh the hydrophobic properties.

Step 5: Deep Clean the Interior

Las Vegas winters mean closed windows and heaters running, which traps dust, allergens, and odors inside the cabin. Spring is the time to air everything out and deep clean.

Interior spring checklist:

  • Vacuum everything — seats, carpets, floor mats, trunk, between and under seats, and all crevices
  • Shampoo carpets and cloth upholstery — use a hot water extractor for deep stains
  • Clean leather surfaces — pH-balanced leather cleaner, never household cleaners or wipes that strip natural oils
  • Condition leather — apply a quality leather conditioner with UV inhibitors. The Las Vegas sun coming through your windows can crack and fade unprotected leather within a single season
  • Clean all plastic and vinyl trim — dash, door panels, center console
  • Sanitize high-touch surfaces — steering wheel, shift knob, door handles, buttons

A professional interior detail covers all of this and more. It’s particularly important if you have kids, pets, or frequently eat in the car — the things that accumulate over winter are more than just dust.

Step 6: Protect Interior Surfaces from UV

Cleaning the interior is only half the job. Protection is what prevents damage between details.

  • Leather: Apply a UV-blocking conditioner to all leather surfaces. Reapply every 6-8 weeks during summer
  • Dashboard and plastics: Use a non-greasy UV protectant (matte finish, not shiny — shiny dressings create dangerous glare)
  • Windshield sunshade: If you don’t already use one, get a quality reflective sunshade. It reduces interior surface temperatures by 30-40°F and dramatically extends the life of your dashboard and steering wheel
  • Tinted windows: If your car doesn’t have quality ceramic window tint, spring is the time to invest. It blocks up to 99% of UV rays and significantly reduces cabin temperature

Step 7: Wheels, Tires, and Trim

Your wheels and tires take a beating from brake dust, road grime, and curb encounters. Spring is the time to give them proper attention.

  • Wheels: Clean with a dedicated wheel cleaner (not dish soap). For heavy brake dust buildup, an iron remover works wonders on wheels too
  • Tires: Scrub sidewalls with an all-purpose cleaner and a stiff brush. Apply a quality tire dressing — I recommend a satin or matte finish over the ultra-glossy “wet look” that attracts dust
  • Rubber and plastic trim: Treat all exterior rubber seals, trim pieces, and mudflaps with a UV protectant. Untreated rubber and plastic fades from black to gray shockingly fast under the Las Vegas sun
  • Wheel wells: Often overlooked, but cleaning and dressing your wheel wells gives the car a finished, thorough look

Step 8: Glass Treatment

Clean glass isn’t just about appearance — it’s a safety issue. Over winter, an invisible film of off-gassing from interior plastics builds up on the inside of your windshield, creating glare and reduced visibility.

  • Interior glass: Clean with an ammonia-free glass cleaner and a waffle-weave microfiber towel
  • Exterior glass: After cleaning, apply a hydrophobic glass sealant to the windshield and side windows. This causes rain to bead and roll off at highway speeds, improving visibility dramatically during our rare but intense desert rainstorms
  • Headlights: If your headlights are yellowing or hazy (extremely common in the desert UV), a headlight restoration polish can bring them back to clear. Severely degraded headlights may need professional sanding and recoating

Step 9: Engine Bay Quick Clean

While not strictly detailing, a quick engine bay clean in spring has practical benefits:

  • Removes the dust and debris that accumulates over winter, which can trap heat
  • Makes it easier to spot leaks, worn belts, and other maintenance issues
  • Prevents rodent-attracting debris buildup (a real issue in desert areas, especially near Boulder City and outer North Las Vegas)

Use a dedicated engine degreaser, avoid direct high-pressure water on electrical components, and dress plastic covers with a UV protectant when done.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a full spring detail cost in Las Vegas?

It depends on the vehicle size, condition, and level of service. An exterior detail starts at $90 for sedans, while a comprehensive full detail (interior + exterior + protection) ranges from $250-$700 depending on the vehicle. Paint correction is additional if needed.

Can I do a spring detail myself?

Absolutely — many of these steps are DIY-friendly with the right products and technique. Where most people benefit from professional help is paint correction (requires specialized tools and experience) and ceramic coating application (one shot to get it right). A professional eye also catches problems you might miss.

How long does a spring detail take?

A thorough spring detail typically takes 4-6 hours for a sedan and 6-8 hours for an SUV or truck. If paint correction is involved, add 2-4 hours depending on severity.

When exactly should I do my spring detail?

In Las Vegas, March through mid-April is the sweet spot. Temperatures are comfortable for working outdoors, and you’ll be ahead of the summer heat that starts ramping up in May. Don’t wait until June — by then, the damage from the first heat waves is already accumulating.

Do I need a full detail or just a maintenance wash?

If your car has been regularly maintained with washes and has existing paint protection (sealant or ceramic coating), a thorough maintenance wash with a clay bar and protection boost may be sufficient. If it’s been more than 6 months since a full detail, or you notice swirl marks, water spots, or fading, go for the full treatment.
